As you may know, daily life can be frustrating for those living with Parkinson’s, and that certainly rang true for 75-year-old Margaret.
Margaret was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2011.
“I had noticed my left arm didn’t swing but I didn’t think anything of it. But when my fine motor skills started to go, I sought medical advice and was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. It was predominately affecting my left side, which is lucky because I’m right-handed.
Over time, Margaret found simple tasks like carrying her groceries became increasingly difficult. She also suffers from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), and would stay at home for fear of going out and being ‘caught short’.
Thanks to our kind-hearted donors, THRF Group Parkinson’s has been able to conduct a 12-week trial using infra-red lighting on the heads and abdomens of patients with Parkinson’s disease.
Margaret was willing to try anything to alleviate her symptoms, so she signed up for the trial.
“I thought to myself it may work, it may not work but if you don’t fund research trials and you don’t participate in them, how are you supposed to know?” says Margaret.
“When something hits you like getting diagnosed with Parkinson’s, you want to be able to manage it in any way you can. This is why research into complementary treatments like red light therapy is vital.”
How does infra-red light therapy for Parkinson’s work?
As you probably know, Parkinson’s is a degenerative disease that has been linked to the dysfunction of the mitochondria of neurons in the brain. It can cause tremors, difficulty with movement and motor skills, alongside decreasing cognitive function.
Infra-red light therapy works on the mitochondria of cells to increase energy production, improve blood flow to neurons and works to help our genes assist the brain in repairing itself.
It’s a non-intrusive, comfortable treatment with zero side effects, and the results we found were astounding.
Most patients saw improvements in their Parkinson’s, including gait, balance, cognition and fine motor skills.
We know that along with acting directly on the mitochondria, infra-red light therapy has amazing benefits for gut health.
Studies have found that people who suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome, like Margaret, and other gut disorders have an increased risk of developing Parkinson’s disease.
Our research points to new knowledge that improved gut health could mean less of the inflammation that gradually contributes to the disease.
Infra-red light therapy decreases ‘bad’ gut bacteria linked to Parkinson’s disease, and increases ‘good’ gut bacteria that has protective effects against Parkinson’s.
Margaret’s new lease on life
The outcome of this trial changed Margaret’s life for the better, and the effects on her Parkinson’s and IBS were truly astonishing.
After 6-weeks of treatment, Margaret regained her sense of smell.
While lining up for a sausage in bread at Bunnings, she realised she could smell the onion sizzling on the BBQ. That was the first time she could smell since shortly after her diagnosis.
Now she can go out into her beautiful garden and enjoy her roses once more, which she has dearly missed.
The tremors in Margaret’s hands decreased, meaning carrying groceries is no longer such an arduous chore.
Margaret says she’s always felt like she could take on the world. Using the infra-red light therapy to help control her Parkinson’s and IBS has allowed her to keep trying new things.
“You’re not really living if you don’t do new things, or if you curtail things because you’re afraid. I think the infra-red light therapy has helped me so much in that regard,” Margaret says proudly.
